Penn State historian Michael Bezilla writes that "Engineering education was important in the context of land grant education from [Penn State's] ... earliest years." A class in engineering was part of the first curriculum of the Farmers' High School in 1859. From 1890 to 1910, it enrolled at least one half of Penn State's undergraduates.
